About National Street Service

Established in 2017 with a pilot in San Francisco, the National Street Service (NSS) is expanding to San Antonio, Texas and Pontiac, Michigan for a 4-week energizing city-wide program.

The National Street Service (www.nationalstreetservice.org) works across neighborhoods, generations, cultures, and city lines to celebrate the people, places, and moments that make our streets so valuable. We honor the soul of our cities by working with everyday people to make streets better places for everyone. The National Street Service is an initiative of Ford’s Greenfield Labs in collaboration with Gehl.

Position Summary

We are inviting YOU to become part of the National Street Service. We are seeking 15 volunteers for a 4-week citywide project in both Pontiac, Michigan and San Antonio, Texas. These programs run concurrently with our projects in Boise and Philadelphia. Volunteers will have flexible assignments totaling approximately five hours of work per week, with a stipend of $150. Women, minorities, people with disabilities, and veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.

This program is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to make streets better for their community. During the program, you will observe and explore your street, create opportunities to help others reimagine what the street is for, physically transform your streets, and collaborate across neighborhoods on projects to make streets welcoming for everyone.

You get a toolkit that will help you discover and explore your streets and connect with your neighbors and people across your city. You’ll learn new ways of telling stories and communicating what you value in your city. You’ll build social capital and you’ll earn some money too! Your fellow participants will be anyone from the mayor to a street engineer to a new neighbor to a firefighter. You’ll also work closely with team members from Ford and the urban design firm, Gehl.

The NSS program is organized in three phases. In the first phase you will spend time out in the street, observing and reflecting to give you a fresh perspective. You will see what is working well, and where there are opportunities for improvement. In the second phase you will be guided to start taking action in the street, and having conversations with others to learn about how streets are important to others in your community. In the final phase you will choose your own course of action! You will apply what you have learned about your local streets and community, and use low-cost materials to bring an idea you have into the street in a temporary way.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Communicate with the city lead in a timely manner through text messages or email - Manage short daily tasks independently and reliably
  • Make thoughtful observations of your street
  • Meet fellow volunteers and work together to create projects
  • Attend Kick-off event and final summit in your city - Have fun!
